Speak Up – Trafficking Weekend

by in Community, Events, Features, Sliding Gallery

February 24, 2012toFebruary 26, 2012

This young adult gathering will unpack not only the root causes of modern-day slavery, but also the ways in which we can act as a modern-day slavery abolitionist movement.

Speakers include:
Sex trade survivor Bridget Perrier (from Sex Trade 101)
Stan and Aura Burditt from M.A.S.T. & The Salvation Army
Joe and Patricia Elkerton from Project 417, and more!!

Workshops Include:
- Poverty & Human Trafficking – Joe & Patricia Elkerton
- Political Action – Tom Abel & Robynn Bishop
- Song Writing – Nate Gerber
- Resistance Art – Jessica Puddicombe and Matt Rawlins
- Screen Printing – “Better Than Alchemy” leaders (Sharon Hann and more TBA)
- Inspiration from Salvation Army History – Megan Smith
- The Newton Effect – Joe & Patricia Elkerton
- Healthy Relationships – Bridget Perrier

We will also be taking to the streets in active protest against modern-day slavery… so if you can only come for the Saturday afternoon, come join us in one of three expressions of the protest:
1. silent, praying poster-holder (holding placards with real stories)
2. bold, talking-to-strangers-canvasser (stopping pedestrians for conversation)
3. seated, booth-manning helper (where pedestrians can go to sign postcards to send to their MP about the issue)

Experience what it means to be a voice for the voiceless. Connect with like-minded youth, and celebrate victories as we dream and pray and work for the freedom of the oppressed.
