Resolved: Fail Not Fail

by in Soul Food

"For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law." (Galatians 5:17-18)

Oh, I hate that moment. Do you hate that moment? It's the moment immediately after I've given into a sinful impulse. I made the decision in my head not to do it. I told myself I wasn't going to do it, that I was stronger than this, that I knew right from wrong. And then I watched myself cave right in and do it.

The conclusion: This sin is stronger than me. I just cannot help myself. I don't have the power to resist. I must be a terrible Christian.

It's the wrong conclusion. According to Paul here I am not strong enough in my own spiritual power to win this spiritual battle. But — when I follow the lead of God's Spirit inside of me, using His power — I cannot lose that battle.

Think: What is it worth to have access to the power of God to overcome our desire to sin? How do you know if you're walking (or not walking) in the Spirit's power?

Pray: Ask God to help you to understand better what it means to "keep walking" by the Spirit's power, especially when it comes to fighting your desire to sin.

Do: If you get the chance, ask a Christian teacher or mentor you trust how he or she chooses to "keep walking" in the power of God's Spirit instead of his or her own power.
