Even though we’re 8 weeks into a new year, we’re still encouraging you to change some aspects of your life and lifestyle this year. This fifth new year’s resolution for 2011 we are strongly encouraging you to be mindful of how you package and present your body for the world to see.
New Year’s Resolution #5 – Dress PG-13
You’d have to live under a rock and NEVER be at a school, mall, beach or any public space to notice the style of dress for today’s teenager. Not only does our overly sexualized culture show itself in the media like we talked about in resolution 4 but it also show’s itself in the area of fashion too. How? Read on.
“Pants on the ground, pants on the ground. Lookin’ like a fool with yer pants on the ground.” The rest of the world (read ‘that cute girl you desperately want to notice you’) doesn’t need to see your tighty whitey’s or boxers. Worse yet, your butt crack. We hate to break it to you but that’s not gonna draw her to you like a magnet does steel. Maybe you haven’t figured it out yet but your undies aren’t an accessory you know. Not to mention you’re going to have a bow legged problem in your future if you keep walking with your legs apart to prevent your pants from droppin’ to the ground. Do us all a favour (and the girls too) and pull up your pants and/or wear a belt and wear it tighter.
Guys are visual and they don’t need anything that contributes to that. Do them all a favour and don’t wear such low cut tops, major push-up bras and see through shirts. They also don’t need to see your skivy’s above your low rise jeans, your bare mid-section peeking out below your short shirt and way too much thigh cuz of your excuse for a skirt or Daisy Dukes shorts. One last thing, those jeans with holes all through them… can you make sure there’s more denim than holes as well as be sure the holes are in appropriate places? Guys hormones and imaginations are already going overtime. Don’t add fuel to the fire and contribute to their lusting. Help them out a bit! FYI – your value, beauty, worth and attractiveness is defined by who you are NOT your naked flesh.
WHAT’S THE WORD?
It’s helpful to view the issue from another perspective. As a Christian, the bible gives us a way in which to see and understand our world. It should influence and shape our world view. Here’s some thoughts it shares about beauty and how to present yourself.
And I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes. For women who claim to be devoted to God should make themselves attractive by the good things they do. ~ 1 Timothy 2:9-10 NLT
Talking to wives, one of Jesus’ followers and the one whom he said he’s build his church – Peter – says they should lives of purity and reverance by allowing their beauty to be defined by a gentle, gracious inner spirit NOT hairstyle/colour, jewellry or fashion clothing (see 1 Peter 3:3-4).
ACTIONS TO TAKE
- Cover up the B.B’s – butt cracks & breasts. Nobody really needs to see them…seriously!
- Check out Modest is Hottest
- Check out some books like Good Girls Don’t Have to Dress Bad: A Style Guide for Every Woman
- Do you (should you?) care about what you’re wearing? Why or why not?
- How does what you wear affect how others look at you or treat you?
- How do you determine what you wear or don’t wear?
- How do you feel about others viewing you solely as a sex object whose purpose and existence is to exist for their sexual satisfaction?
Hey… let’s talk about it. Why don’t you leave your comments below to tell us what you think.
