READ
Take a read through these lyrics of a song by U2 called ‘Yahweh’. You may or may not be familiar with it.

Take these shoes
Click clacking down some dead end street
Take these shoes
And make them fit
Take this shirt
Polyester white trash made in nowhere
Take this shirt
And make it clean, clean
Take this soul
Stranded in some skin and bones
Take this soul
And make it sing

Yahweh, Yahweh
Always pain before a child is born
Yahweh, Yahweh
Still I’m waiting for the dawn

Take these hands
Teach them what to carry
Take these hands
Don’t make a fist
Take this mouth
So quick to criticize
Take this mouth
Give it a kiss

Yahweh, Yahweh
Always pain before a child is born
Yahweh, Yahweh
Still I’m waiting for the dawn

Still waiting for the dawn, the sun is coming up
The sun is coming up on the ocean
This love is like a drop in the ocean
This love is like a drop in the ocean

Yahweh, Yahweh
Always pain before a child is born
Yahweh, tell me now
Why the dark before the dawn?

Take this city
A city should be shining on a hill
Take this city
If it be your will
What no man can own, no man can take
Take this heart
Take this heart
Take this heart
And make it break

Listen to the song here.

DO IT
We have many comforts that we hold on to that our homeless brothers and sisters don’t. We have proper winter clothing but many of them don’t or they don’t have enough. They might have thin socks with old shoes. They may have a coat, but it’s not a winter coat. They will be without a scarf or perhaps gloves. In the bitter cold of winter, just being without one of these has huge affects. The cold and chill penetrate deep inside your bones and begin to push you down. If a homeless person is already thinking about the situation they are in, being without the necessary clothing to get through winter is a further punishment.

Part of our prayer this Friday includes this experience:

  • As you go outside today (or whatever day you are reading this), go outside without either a toque, hat, scarf or gloves.

Do this as an act of solidarity with our homeless brothers and sisters.

PRAY
In the cold early part of this new year, please join us to pray:

  • for the adults, youth and children that are living in temporary housing or out on the streets.
  • that they would have the resources they need like clothing, food, shelter, friends, connection to community, choices, access to permanent housing, job opportunities and training.
  • for youth who are couch surfing at friends or boy/girlfriends houses.
  • that these youth wouldn’t be further victimized or degraded by exchanging sexual favors in return for the shelter.
  • for those who are exploited like this to have the courage to say no, find other safer options, find freedom from the situation and ultimately a safe/stable home or roof over their heads.
  • for hearts that have lost hope to be renewed, strengthened and find hope again.
  • God’s word from Isaiah 40:31 and Psalm 91:1-2 over them.
