April Focus on Environment
Last week was Earth Day and so many communities cleaned up their neighbourhoods. Schools had action teams, communities came together to clean up parks and streets. Everyone helped out to clean up and look after our communities.
We each have a responsibility in that. But what about the companies in our cities that are not doing their part or keep on polluting. Do you even know what companies near you are polluting? The pollution watch site lets you search what companies are in your neighbourhood and how they might be polluting your community.
Within Canada, the provinces that suffer the most pollution from companies are ranked, the top 5 are:
- Alberta
- Ontario
- Quebec
- British Columbia
- Manitoba
ACTION
It seems unfair that we can do all the clean up on Earth Day but companies get away with pumping pollutants in to our communities. Awareness around the issues are a key first step in getting people concerned then hopefully involved. One way to create awareness is through the arts. You could write and distribute poems, songs, artwork, photographs via social networking sites, at school or in your local paper. Here’s a poem titled ‘Earth’ by Nathan Harris for you to reflect on:
The Earth is a gift given to us,
it is something we can always trust.
We must keep our Earth calm and pleased.
Just like the wind blows a great breeze.
The Earth is something we must protect,
not something we”ll disrespect.
Without the Earth where will be.
We will be without land, air, nor a sea.
The Earth has many wonders,
there is much more to discover.
So keep our Earth a safe place.
So we won”t have to wonder out in space.
