Angel Week: After the Angels

by in Soul Food

"When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, 'Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.' " (Luke 2:15)

After what was likely the most intense moment in the lives of these men, the angels left. Went home to heaven. The dark and quiet of the night returned. You can almost hear a dog bark in the distance. Now what?

Have you ever had an experience at a camp or a conference where you were just overwhelmed with the truth of God's Word for your life? You knew, no doubt, that God's message was for you. It was emotional, exhausting, life-changing. But when the moment ended, the question remained: What would you do next?

The shepherds didn't say, "Wow, what an experience!" and go back to tending sheep or playing cards or whatever shepherds do late at night. They said, "Wow, the Lord gave us a message; let's go check it out!"

How are you doing at checking out God's messages to you in His Word by obeying them in your real life? Are you in this thing for the experience of spirituality or for the reality of "God with us" every day?

Think: Why do you think it's so easy to go on after an incredible spiritual experience as if nothing ever happened? Why do you think the shepherds didn't do that?

Pray: Thank God that the shepherds understood it was God speaking to them through those angels and that they acted on what they heard. Ask Him to help you to act on what He says to you from the Bible.

Do: Think about the most intense spiritual experience you have had that was based on God's Word (at a camp or retreat or even in your own personal Bible study). In a sentence or two, write down what you were convinced God wanted from you in that moment.
